What to Do If Your Laptop Fan Stops Working

With any computer, you are going to eventually run into problems. One thing that can happen on a laptop on very rare occasions is that you will find that your laptop fan suddenly stops working. This is a huge issue because this can quickly lead to overheating which can cause severe damages to the computer.

Most people might not be aware of it, but overheating is what causes most hardware to actually fail. If you keep your laptop on while the fan is not working, your whole computer will very shortly fail.

The first thing that you need to do is shut down your laptop immediately. This is because you do not want it to be too hot and have a problem. Do not leave it on else you can mess up your system.

Unplug the laptop and take out the battery. You are going to first dust out the fan area. This is best done with a can of compressed air. Also look at the fan and make sure that something is not blocking it. If this is the case, most likely it is going to work again after getting the object out of the way.

Turn the laptop back on and see if it is working now. If so, things are fine. If not, there is more that you need to do.

You can actually do a few things here. The first is to send your computer in to get fixed. This can be done under warranty in most cases. You can also use a local repair shop since this is a very easy fix.

If you absolutely need to use the laptop before sending it in for repair, another temporary option is to use a laptop cooling pad. This will help cool off the computer quite a bit. Use a tool like SpeedFan that will monitor the internal temperature of your computer. At times the cooling pad alone will be enough to compensate for the lack of a working fan. Monitor this at your own risk to make sure you are not going to burn up your system.
