Apple iPad is phenomenal. In just three months, 4.5 million of iPad have been sold. If averaged, it means that 50 thousand of iPad are sold. With success like that, not surprisingly, many manufacturers are trying to tow the success of the iPad. One of them is Samsung who releases a similar product called Samsung Galaxy Tab.
As an introduction, Galaxy Tab is a mobile device that has a seven inches screen. Unlike iPad, Tab can be used as a mobile phone. In addition to telephone communication, Galaxy Tab can also be used to send email, SMS, MMS and video call. Tab uses GSM as its networks connection and also supports HSDPA. WiFi and Bluetooth are also available for its wireless connection.
For storage, Tab provides 16GB of internal capacity. Operating System uses only about 1GB, so still plenty of room left. But if it was still lacking, there is a microSD slot that can accept up to 32GB. There is also GPS that is integrated with various applications, for example "Maps and Places" that will show interesting places such as restaurant around us.
With 7-inch screen, Galaxy Tab is smaller than iPad (9.7-inches). But it is not entirely negative effect. One positive effect is Tab can be grasped easily with one hand, especially with a weight of only 380 grams. In comparison, the iPad has a weight of 680 grams.
Speaking of design, I think Samsung managed to make Tab modern style. Shiny glossy materials are used to impress its luxury, and fortunately did not make fingerprints easily left behind. Touch-screen on the bottom of the screen (Call, Menu, End, and Home) also feels modern because it gives the effect of vibration when it is being touched.
Galaxy Tab does not provide a lot of buttons around its body. There are only the Power button and Volume. There is no button to lock the accelerometer function as provided by iPad. Just to remind, the accelerometer function is to detect the position of the device and synchronizes the screen orientation according to the position of the device. So if the position of the device is portrait, the screen will change to portrait orientation, and vice versa. Instead, the screen-lock function is available in Notification window. The placement of this function in the notification window makes it is easier to lock the screen. It is different from Android standard setting which usually puts the menu in the window Settings> Display.
The accelerometer function is fairly responsive because the slightest change in orientation will make the screen immediately follow. Other sensor that is available in Tab is "proximity" that adjusts screen brightness according to condition around us automatically.
Talking about its screen, Galaxy Tab uses LCD screen with 1024x600 pixel resolution. This is different from its brother in smart-phone class (Samsung Galaxy S) which uses a newer and better technology, the AMOLED screen. Why not AMOLED? Samsung says that they choose LCD screen for Tab because LCD screen needs less power than AMOLED. Although Tab still uses LCD screen technology, I am quite satisfied with the display quality of this gadget. Images look sharp and clear, including when I use this gadget to watch movies. The screen sensitivity is good because when I use my finger to touch, pinch press the screen, Tab almost always detects my finger movement perfectly. Although its user-experience level is lower than iPad, I think Galaxy Tab will be able to satisfy all of its users. Another reason why this gadget will satisfy its user is Camera. This is a facility that is not owned by iPad. Not just one, but two. In the front side it has a 1.3 MP camera, while on the backside it has a 3 MP camera equipped with flash.
Samsung called Galaxy Tab as "mobile tablet" which shows its segmentation as a mobile device that can be used for various purposes. After testing it, I think it can become the center tab of your activities during the trip. Galaxy Tab is a reliable mobile-entertainment-center because Galaxy Tab Tab's video player has multi-codec support without re-encoding which enables playback of MPEG4, H.263, H.264, Divx/Xvid files without needing file conversion, and its audio player can play MP3, WAV, eAAC, until FLAC without any problems. If you love reading, Galaxy Tab can be used as an e-reader. Galaxy tab has Reader Hub application as a gate to access digital bookstore like Kobo, PressDisplay, and Zinio. Another good feature of this gadget is its browser supports Flash, so the flash animation on a website can be viewed, not like iPad that will only show a blank area. Galaxy Tab's browser also supports multi-touch, so that we can pinch to zoom-in/zoom-out when viewing certain websites.
At the time of announcing Galaxy Tab, Samsung calls this gadget as a device that will bring a lot of experience to the mobile world, and my test proves this. There are many things you can do on this gadget, ranging from correspondence via email, typing documents, read books, or just watching movies. All those activities seemed appropriate, enjoyable and addictive. Be prepared to hold the world in your hand because all the work and entertainment can be accessed through this device.
